LA Times Loves Slovenian Wines
01/30/2008
I’ll break away from what is bound to be the No. 1 topic around here today (Slovenia’s ratification of the Lisbon Treaty) and post a link to a lovely article on Wild Wild Wines from Slovenia published by the LA Times along with a list of wines to watch for.
On a personal note, pinela is one of my favourite white wines and I did enjoy a glass of the 2004 Simčič Sauvignon Blanc Reserve from the list with this Sunday’s lunch.
Incidentally, just a few weeks ago one of my professors (politcal science) argued that no debate on politics at a high theoretical level is possible in the absence of good wine. It would seem Slovenians have the basics covered, eh? Or, as Luka would say, ne est-ce pas? 😉

Nice, but – what is this: “When the region emerged from Soviet control in 1991, vineyard owners were released from a Soviet-era requirement to sell their grapes to the local cooperative winery.” ??

The grapes can grow free now that they are no longer in the shadow of the Iron Curtain! Er….can I get a fact check? 🙂

The forgot to mention the fact that our wines are now much safer to drink because they don’t contain any artificial red dye which was required in Soviet times.

Wine and politics fit perfectly in Slovenia – just like wines, Slovene politicians fit one of three categories: Red, White and Pink 😈

Pengovsky: didn’t know that … 🙂
Common people, let us not be unhappy: a tiny tiny country nobody really knows sent the Sowjet Union packing in 91. It makes us real heroes!

@alcessa: Well do try to remember this is a California-based paper? 😉 Even if their Governor was born just a couple dozen miles from the Slovenian border, it doesn’t prevent them from claiming that Lipizzaners come from Portugal in their blockbuser movies…
@Lisa: Sounds like great documentary material, eh?
@buba švabe: And some of us are still hooked to the colour… darn!
@P: Dangerous paths you tread there… somebodys bound to end up at Brokerback?
@alcessa: Knew I could count on you for finding the glass to be half full in the end! 😀

@P: My god!! It actually only now dawned on me, why I’ve always been a steadfast red wine drinker. The damn indoctrination! But since the Regime is supposed to had been “totalitarian” I find it really strange, how the Lipizzaner managed to pull it off being blatantly white. That is a bit suspicious, ne est-ce pas?

@Luka: Tsk, tsk, tsk… I can tell you may have been a ‘pionir’, but unlike myself were not initiated into the ranks of ‘mladinci’. You should have known that Stari was a diehard fan of white horses!!!

As regards red wine, though, I’ve suffered the same fate of irreversible indoctrination as yourself 😉

Well, I always suspected the regime wasn’t as “totalitarian” as they are trying to portray it these days. There obviously existed some freedom of ideas! Even amongst the highest representatives!

@Luka: There is always freedom of ideas amongs the highest representatives of any ol’ regime, regardless of its stage of perceived democracy.

Živjelo bratstvo i jedinstvo! To je parola, treba stvarno živjeti dobrosusjedski i uvažavati jedni druge.
